Gomex 50 Box Corer
The Box Corer is designed for sampling soft sediments in lakes and oceans, providing high-quality, undisturbed samples for environmental and biological studies. Lowered vertically to the seabed, the corer encloses the recovered sediment completely, minimizing the loss of fine materials during recovery.
Known as the Gomex corer due to its historical use in the Gulf of Mexico, this sampler is constructed entirely from stainless steel and offers a large sampling area. Compact and versatile, it can be deployed from smaller vessels and is particularly suited for soft, deep-water sediments.
The system consists of four main units:
the sample box,
the fixed support frame,
the structural linkage and sliding bar,
the release mechanism.
Lead weights, mounted on side trays, provide both ballast and the driving force to close and secure the spades during sampling.
Compared with the traditional USNEL spade corer, the Gomex Box Corer is lighter, easier to handle, safer in rough sea conditions, and more cost-effective. Studies have shown that it produces superior quantitative samples of macrofauna, making it a preferred tool for deep-sea biologists.
